Upon graduation from Law School in 1978, John and Ann established a law office in Center, North Dakota, where they continued to provide general practice legal services until Ann retired in 2023. John was also the Oliver County State’s Attorney for 40+ years..
John served District 33 in the North Dakota Legislature from 1990 through 2002, where he chaired several committees and was influential in passage of many important pieces of legislation that greatly benefited the wellbeing of the citizens of North Dakota. John was highly respected and received numerous awards.
Throughout his career John has been deeply involved with Indian Law, working for Tribal governments, agencies, and individuals from several Reservations. He’s provided legal services in a variety of areas, from discrimination trials in Federal Courts to assisting with contracts and economic development projects, to serving as a part-time District Judge and Supreme Court Justice for the Three Affiliated Tribes/MHA Nation.
John and his family reside in Bismarck, North Dakota. He is the father of four grown kids and four grandkids. In their spare time, they enjoy outdoor activities such as water and snow skiing, golf, softball, and fishing, and love spending time with all the family at their cabin at Devils Lake. John and Ann recently branched out into the movie making business, helping with the production of two feature length movies based on North Dakota history (Hazel’s Heart and Medora, Empress of the Badlands).
John was a community leader in Center, sitting on numerous boards and was instrumental in the completion of several projects, such as a community center, an indoor swimming pool, a clinic, a gun club, and a golf course.
